The Meters – or the Original Meters, as they were billed. New Orleans royalty of the first degree. My favorite band of all time.
Overall, this is a pretty good show – though it’s not the Meters in their prime by any means. It’s a little disheartening to hear Art Neville’s voice ravaged as it is… he ‘s always been one of the finest singers ANYWHERE. Better than his more famous brother, in my opinion… He’s still got the timing and the phrasing, but at 74, his voice ain’t what it used to be. Even Zig, who’s always had a gravelly voice, seemed to be struggling with the notes more than I ever remember. And, frankly, the guys could’ve used another practice or three. But, man, there are moments when they all come together and it’s just spine-tingling…
The highlight to me is Cyril — sitting in with the full, original lineup of Meters for the first time in 25 years? — KILLING “No More Okey Doke,” which also benefits from the guys from Bonerama on trombone. And Zig’s showcase of People Say is also great.
Enjoy! Let’s hope this isn’t the last time these guys play together…
